El Retiro Lodge

We had two recommendations for accommodation in Lanquin, Zephyr and El Retiro. We initially tried to get into Zephyer, but they did not have lots of space, so we headed over to El Retiro. Definitely a smart decision. While I am sure Zephyr is also great, we heard from others that it was difficult to sleep because the party just doesn't stop. At El Retiro it was nice and peaceful, but there is still a bar so if you want to make it a party you can. By far the two best things about this hostel is its location right on the river and the nightly dinner buffet. Probably some of the best quality (and quantity) food we have had, for between Q40 and 55. Cost for a dorm or loft was Q35 a night and we got a deal where if we stayed two nights we got the third free.

THIS is the best hostel in all of Guatemala!!! Total perfection in a hostel!!! Location, view, the actual hostel itself, TOP NOTCH!!!! Located in the middle of nowhere it seems, as does Sumac Champey, and thats what makes it great... Sitting on a hill top overlooking the river and mountain vally, breathtaking!!! Bar, restaurant with truely amazing food, outdoor chillout area, private A frame cabins for $12... Dorms are $4... And the dorms are amazing up in the lofts of the lodge... Free water, laundery service, Ipod service-they will load your ipod down from the library of around 30,000 albums, for a small price... Book library, shuttle services to anywhere, and they also do the best tour of Sumac Champey and the caves...
If you are in Guat, this hostel and Sumac Champey are a must!!!! But be warned, this is a fucking notorious party hostel, and the parties are insane!!!

Stayed here Jan 2012 (200Q private rm with bath). Everyday I had to ask staff to sort out the water as it stopped in our room. Last morning had to leave on 6am transfer and spoke to the guy on duty. He was really rude, indicating he would sort it later. I explained I had to leave soon and he finally fixed it (in 1 min) but not without me having to get annoyed. Classic case of made it in guidebook, charge a lot and stop caring. Due to this would struggle to recommend although location is lovely.
