Standard border crossing at Melchor-Benque
About 1 year ago
Whether entering or exiting Guatemala, there is really nothing to this border crossing. From Guatemala to Belize, you essentially get dropped off at Melchor, check out of Guatemala, walk across a bridge, check into Belize, then catch, if you're lucky, a bus to Benque or San Ignacio. There is no ATM machine on the Belizean side, so bring cash to exchange at the border. If you have to take a taxi from the border, expect to pay BZD$30 (USD$15). Also, when you go to check out of Guatemala, depending on who is working, you may be asked to pay an "exit fee." This fee is illegal as it is not a government mandate. Simply ask for a receipt and you will get your stamp and be on your way without any troubles.
