The highlight of my trip to Nicaragua. Quetzaltrekkers is a non-profit organization, run by volunteers, that works with children on the street. They offer single/multiday treks. I did the "Volcan el Hoyo" 2 day trek and absolutely loved it. It was physically challenging and hot (dry season!). You have to carry your own water (8 lts), and either food or a tent. We got to camp in one of the most beautiful places I have ever been and got to see both the sunset and sunrise. Food provided during the trek was surprisingly good, and the guides were all helpful and friendly. This was also a great way to meet other outdoorsy travellers. The Quetzaltrekkers office has some gear (tents, sleeping bags, fleece, hiking shoes) you can borrow if you don`t have your own. Good, comfortable shoes and a camera are a must. http://www.quetzaltrekkers.com/nichome.html
