I stayed at the "Valley Hostel." I was greeted by a very friendly host. This was a great "base camp" but my German friend and I did go in "off season" or in October, so there was barely any people there. Beware the food store in Lauterbrunnen it closes quite early. It was at around 6pm when it did close. If it closes no worry you can always take the train into Interlaken. Their stores are open a bit latter.
This cable car you will take to the top of the valley is also the way to get to the schilthorn. This is a place that was featured in a James Bond film, but be prepared to pay a lot of this. Also keep an eye out for the 25+ waterfalls in the mountain.
