If you can hire a bike anywhere along the Los Angeles beach front, there is an awesome cycle path that goes from Hermosa in the south almost as far north as you want - up to Malibu.

We cycled from Manhattan Beach to Santa Monica Pier (a 25mile round trip) and there's loads to see along the way and some very interesting contraptions that pass you. It's also a great way to see the coast without having to hire a car and pay $15 at every car park you come across and also some good exercise. It's mostly flat and your biggest obstacle is the occasional out of control tandem bikes and walkers who can't read the 'cycles only' signs!!
