Playa Hermosa as a Base for Your Stay in Costa Rica
View of the beach from Bungalow #1 in Playa Hermosa

Three of my friends and I recently got back from an all girls trip in Costa Rica. I have been abroad before but Costa Rica is by far one of the most beautiful places I have ever been.

We rented a bungalow (#1 to be specific) in Playa Hermosa. This is five minutes outside of Jaco and about an hour from San Jose airport. I highly suggest you rent a car. It is relatively easy to get around as long as you get the GPS that has the Costa Rican road system on there. The Hermosa Bungalows in Playa Hermosa are very nice, cheap, right on the beach, and safe. If you like to surf, this is a perfect place to stay. Every morning around 5:30 am, I saw tons of surfers hit the black sand beach. There is also a very nice pool area. Bungalow #1 has Internet, cable, and air conditioning. There is also a manager there who will help get you set up with any excursions you want to go on. The first day we were there, we all piled in a VW bus and drove to a waterfall. For free! Everyone was very friendly and helpful.

I saw an article on here earlier that listed Arenal and Manuel Antonio as some of the top places to go. Manuel Antonio is only an hour away from the bungalows. We took a day trip there and ziplined. They also have rafting, ATV tours, etc. After seeing the national forest, I suggest you go bar hopping around the little town of Quepos. There are a ton of bars and restaurants with awesome views. Arenal is about three hours from the bungalow. We actually rented a hotel in Arenal for the night instead of driving back to the bungalows. If you are looking for a cheap option with a great view of the volcano and hot springs, then I would stay at Arenal Paraiso Hotel and Spa. It was $150 per night for two full beds with an awesome breakfast. The town of Arenal is also fun. We ate at Lava Lounge, which had the best sangria I have ever tasted. It was amazing.

Another sight that isn't too far from Hermosa Bungalows is Montezuma. You can take a water taxi from Jaco for $80 a person. We are cheap, so we drove an hour to Puntarenas and caught a ferry for $11 per car. If you decide to do this, the entire trip will be about three hours. Once the ferry lands, it is an hour's drive to Montezuma. It's a nice little town with great beaches, restaurants, and waterfalls. The majority of people I know who have been to Costa Rica usually end up here at some point.

All in all, it was an awesome trip. If you are interested in staying where we did, here is the website. Bungalow #1 is beach front property, so I would try to rent that one if possible.
