Make Your Own Silver Jewelry

One very unique thing about the Pushkar Bazaar is that you can actually learn how to make the beautiful jewelry you see sold everywhere. At Sunil's Silver School, you'll get to choose from among several gemstones found around Rajasthan to design your piece around. You can make pendants, earrings, bracelets, whatever you like. You'll also have the option to buy your piece at the end. Classes are flexible and revolve around your interests. You can take a few hours a day or classes over several days. There is even a certification that you can get if you have the time. We paid 400 rupees for a 3-hour course. Sunil is great and actually comes from a long line of gold and silversmiths (the Soni caste). I loved some of the pieces he designed that I saw around town and was happy to find the course. Best thing I did in India!

Renting Scooters

Day Trip From the Bazaar

Day Trip From the Bazaar

If you want to get out of the bazaar and out of the city, go for a scenic drive around Pushkar. Rental companies will lend you a scooter for 150 rupees a day. There are plenty of temples (more than 400) to see around Pushkar. You can ask the locals where the babas live in the mountains if you want to drink chai with them and have some shanti time. The government is building better roadways to the temples so there will be easier access if you're afraid of road hazards around the mountains.

Local Specialties

Dal bhati

Dal bhati

Dal bhati is a Rajasthani specialty. It's seasoned chaptai flour cooked directly on firewood, giving it a nice aroma and toasted texture. You eat it by crumbling it with your hands and smother it with dal, garnished with lemons, pickles, and onions. In Pushkar, they can be a little hard to find. Look for dal bhati at the many garden restaurants outside of Pushkar.

Restaurants

Paneer Tikka Masala Whoa

The restaurant in the Venus Hotel right next door to the Silver Palace Jewelry shop serves the best paneer tikka masala in India. While it is easy to find Western food in Pushkar, good Indian food is hard to come by. Sadly, we did not discover this place until our last days in town. Don't make the same mistake we did.

Shopping the Pushkar Bazaar

Shopping the Pushkar Bazaar

The shopping in Pushkar is insane. Even if you don't like shopping, you'll go crazy. Every shop pretty much has the same style clothing (ali babas, aladdins, jersey tops, etc. for 100-250 rupees a piece), and you can have anything custom tailored on the spot for free or for only a few rupees more. If you're into jewelry, you can get any kind of gold, silver, brass, wood, bone, or silver-plated thing you want. Some of the nicer designs we saw were at Silver Palace near Venus Hotel. Say hi to Shankar and Soni for us if you stop by. Bonus Tip: Be careful where you leave your shoes. The roaming cows might decide to use them as urinals!
