Cultural Do's and Dont's
by Laura of laumille.wordpress.com about 2 years ago

South East Asia brings on a whole new set of cultural do's and dont's. In a culture that doesnt resemble anything Western, cultural differences can sometimes be frustrating. Here are some tips to hopefully avert potential crises.

Be respectful in Temples. Women are not suppossed to directly touch monks or pass objects from hand to hand. But do make a point to meet the novices living in the temples. They love practicing their English!

Be polite but don't be manipulated. As a foreigner you will most likely get charged higher bus and boat tickets. Sometimes you can negotiate the prices but at the end of the day, it's their country and what can you do? Watch your personal items and always lock your bike if you rent it. Petty theft is common.

Dont drink the water. Enough said.

Make friends with merchants and store owners. You'll get discounts on items.

Lastly, Be kind. They know when you're being rude and you're only hurting yourself and the reputation of other backpackers.
