Can Tho, Vietnam
What to See
Cai Rang Floating Market
Cai Rang, the largest floating market in the Mekong Delta, is located just outside of Can Tho and is about a 30-minute boat ride from the city. The frenzy of commercial transactions on the river is electrifying. There are literally hundreds of boats in the waterway ready to sell their goods. You can hail a water taxi from the city. Try to negotiate a price by the hour. The best time to go is in the morning when the business day is just beginning. Bring your camera and small bills.
What to Do
I highly recommend you do the biking tour in Can Tho. It will allow you to see a side of the delta that you wouldn't be able to access otherwise from the city. And in a city dominated by water transportation, you will be amazed how far upriver a bike can take you. On this half-day tour (4-6 hours), we passed kids playing in the water, shirtless men chatting and smoking, workers paddling their wooden boats, and grandparents resting in their hammocks. Everyone was extremely friendly, happily greeting us with a cheery "hello" from their homes. They waved and we waved back. Great way to spend the day.
Where to Shop
The best floating market in Vietnam is the large authentic one outside of Can Tho. Any tour shop can organize a trip for you. This one sells larger amounts of products and is much less touristy than the one outside of Ho Chi Minh.
