Hai Luu Buffalo Fighting

Hosted every Jan 16th & 17th of the Lunar calendar (Feb 25th & 26th this year) in honor of General Hai Luu, these games are the oldest buffalo fights in Vietnam. Thousands of villagers come to support the games over a 2-day festival, when the town essentially eats nothing but buffalo meat. Quite a grotesque scene as buffaloes are electrocuted and slaughtered all along the small streets of Hai Luu and outside the stadium. Though "winning" buffaloes are believed to bring good luck, good health, and good harvest, all participating buffaloes are eventually slaughtered. During the festival, the cheapest accommodation option is to rent a room in a home. Look for "cho thue" or "thue phong" signs. Expect to pay a minimum of 150,000 dong. Alternatively, you could stay in Viet Tri and take a motorbike taxi into Hai Luu (50,000 dong) on the day of the festival. Mini-vans pick up in Hai Luu for Hanoi for 50,000 dong.

Getting to Hai Luu from Hanoi

Buses to Vinh Phuc province leave from My Dinh bus station. From there, catch any bus heading to Viet Tri. This should cost you about 70,000 dong. You won't be able to get to Hai Luu directly so just ask the driver to let you off where you can take a motorcycle taxi the rest of the way. From Viet Tri, expect to pay around 50,000-100,000 dong for the 20-min ride + ferry crossing.
