Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon), Vietnam
What to See
Cu Chi Tunnels
The Cu Chi Tunnels are definitely worth the visit when in Ho Chi Minh City. 70 km out of town, you can experience the underground tunnels and hiding places the Viet Cong used during the war. At the end there is an option to fire an automatic rifle on a shooting range. Can be booked at any small tour shop or private taxi can likely be arranged.
War Remnents Museum
A very interesting museum which has large amounts of displays on the Vietnam War from a distinctly Vietnamese perspective.
28 Vo Van Tan St, District 3 Ho Chi Minh City
Less than 1$ to get in, but is possibly closed from 12 - 1:30 for lunch.
A great way to spend the afternoon after seeing the Cu Chi Tunnels in the morning.
What to Do
Spas
All I can say is it was magical. Still talking about the massage I got at Jasmine Spa a couple of years ago. Check them out: http://www.spasvietnam.com/SearchModule/SpaDetail.aspx?Spaid=58. They're at 45 Ton That Thiep - District 1 and can be reached at (848) 38272737.
Where to Stay
Backpacker District
The main street to find hostel in Ho Chi Minh is
Pham Ngu Lao street (aka Backpacker district of Saigon).
There are several hotels and hostels here so get dropped off here and can walk up and down to get room quotes.
Where to Party
Dancing / Discos / Clubs
A 4 story club/ bar located in the center of District 1. ID is not needed, as most hostels, keep them in case of troublesome guests. In addtion to good music, and strong drinks, Saturday night offers a gay night on the second level, if that happens to be your fancy.
Getting Around
Taxi
I'm sure you've heard of many taxi scams that happened to fellow travelers throughout Asia. Ho Chi Minh City, unfortunately, also has a fair share of those complaints. To reduce the risk of experiencing such unpleasant situation, you can try the tips below :
1. Use Mailinh or Vinasun Taxi ONLY.
2. ....and NOT VinaTsun or Mailin or M.Taxi
3. Always make sure the taxi driver turns on the meter before you go.
4. Take fix-priced taxis from the airport to the city. It should cost around 100,000 - 250,000 Dong depending on your destination.
