Total time with a vehicle: 55 minutes Belize has a exit fee. At the immigration desk you have to pay the BZ$37.50 exit fee. There was a sign above the desk explaining what the fee was for - BZ$30 processing fee and BZ$7.50 environmental protection fee. If you are traveling with a vehicle you will be here for a little less than a hour with paperwork and fumigation. Backpackers were in and out in less than 30 minutes.
The Benque-Melchor border crossing is quick and easy as long as you bring enough cash to pay the exit fee, a whopping $18.50. The fee is the highest of all of the Central American countries. In Costa Rica, we were charged $14, but other countries in the region charge only $1-2. There are no ATMs on the Belizean side, so bring cash.
