What You Need to Bring to Hike Volcan San Pedro

I brought two regular sized (20 FL OZ / 600 mL) bottles of water, a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, a 6-pack of Chips-Ahoy cookies, a small pack of cashew nuts, and a mini loaf of banana bread. This was not enough! The next time I do this trek, I'd add a large bottle of Gatorade, a second sandwich that contained some sort of meat, and a Snickers bar. You will also need some sort of warm jacket. It gets cold at the top.

Do You Need a Guide to Hike Volcan San Pedro? Maybe...

Do You Need a Guide to Hike Volcan San Pedro? Maybe...

Yesterday we hiked Volcan San Pedro on Lake Atitlan. Our plan was to show up at the San Pedro la Laguna docks and try and negotiate a cheap guide. Guides cost 130Q per person, and that covers your 100Q entrance fee to the park and a RT tuk tuk to the park entrance. We got one. On the first 1/3 of the hike, the trail branches off 3 or 4 times, where you need to know where to go. Other than that, the guide wasn't necessary. If you want to save money, you could try and negotiate a guide to take you to the 'mirador' only. After that, you won't need them. We also met a few other trekkers along the way who did it on their own without a problem.

Watch out for guides in San Pedro
by Hubert of dosisnecesaria.wordpress.com about 4 years ago

If you want to look for a hotel or hostal in San Pedro and want to be able to take the price down (specially with groups over 5 people) loose the guide that meets you at the dock. They get 5-10 Quetzales from the price you pay at a hotel/hostal if they take you there. You can save those 5-10 easily by asking on the street or finding one by yourself.

Bait-and-Switch at Hotel Peneleu
by Merrill about 5 years ago

Warning: I made a reservation over the phone with Hotel Peneleu, specifying either of the upstairs rooms with views of Lake Atitlan (Nos. 1 or 2) and price. When I arrived, luggage in tow, the manager told me that the room was occupied and tried to make me take an inferior room at a higher price and even to charge me extra for wifi and kitchen use! I spent the first night at Hotel Valle Sol (no wifi or kitchen) but ended up at Xocomil (erratic wifi and kitchen but no view, otherwise clean room and nice folks running it). Had I to do it over again, I'd try to book Hospedaje Casa Elena, right on the lake (wifi, "kitchen" with no fridge, but real cheap) but they were booked solid.

This is a hostel/hotel... Another free for all place in San Pedro, where anything goes... Drinking, drugs, its cool... This place is beautiful, with a lush garden area, a full kitchen available for use... Dorms on one side of the property, and a 3 story building housing the private rooms... Amazing rooftop terrace as well!!! The dorms are nice and cheap!! $5... The privates range from $7 to $12 for the 3rd floor lake view rooms... All the private rooms have a hammock on the patio, and the location of this hostel is in the middle of all the best places and right across from the best bar, Buddah bar.... This is now the hostel I stay at for my trips to S.P....

First thing... This is a free for all party hostel... Do what you want, they dont care, drugs, drinking, its all fair game....
They have a full kitchen stocked relatively well for your use, a chill out area with hammocks and tables, a private pot smoking area, a pool room, space to camp, book library, purified water refills for a small fee... This place is a hostel/home/haven... And the owner is one amazing woman!!! Its located in the best part of San Pedro, located close to all the best bars and restaurants.... Dorms $4, privates $6...

Cool, cheap, great location, full bar and restaurant... Roof top terrace, no internet or purified water, or pretty much anything else... But the location and the bar are worth it... Its located close to all the popular bars and restaurants... Dorms $4, privates $8... Another great hostel in S.P.!!!
