Fishing in Lago (or Laguna) de Apoyo

Lago de Apoyo is a crater lake with slightly salty water. I was told this was the reason the fish do not get all that big. But I was able to catch a stringer full of tilapia one morning as the sun was rising. The fish here are technically cichlids, so they are quite aggressive and territorial. I used a small rattle trap in white shad color and found that 2 or 3 fish would attack it at once, nipping at the tail until they hooked themselves. My hooks were too big to hook up on every strike. The biggest one was about 10 inches long. All fish were taken from a surf board, floating the shoreline and casting toward the bank. Next time, I will bring a fly rod and cast whooly buggers.

Hiking to the Best Lookout of the Lake

From Apoyo Lodge, there's an easy 2 hour or so hike up to the Mirador de la Laguna de Apoyo. The hike leads you along a dirt road that snakes its way uphill until you reach the mirador. Once you get there, you'll find a small town with a couple of restaurants. The trail itself gets quite slippery when dry. I can't imagine how slick it would be if it were raining. Wear proper shoes and bring a few cordobas to buy a beer when you reach to top.

Oasis hostel has transportation from hostel in Granada to their sister hostel on the lake and can stay for the day or overnight (6$ roundtrip transportation). You can also stay at the beautiful Apoyo Lodge ( http://www.apoyolodge.com) in a secluded section of the beach. Getting Around

Taxi

If you have to take a taxi to the airport from Laguna de Apoyo, the cost of a taxi is about $40. From Masaya, it's more than half that. We were quoted $12.50 or 300 cords, a great deal! Allot about 30-40 mins. If you've got the time, the bus is the cheapest option, of course. Head to Masaya, then take a bus to Tipitapa, and finally Managua via Carretera Norte, which should drop you off right in front of the airport.
