What to Do

Scuba Diving

Best Dive Ever
by Hacked By of youtube.com/fırlamaadam about 6 years ago

Danielo, a local instructor at Dive Little Corn, took us out for our night dive. Everyone scheduled to dive that day drank too much Flor de Cana earlier in the day, so my friend and I got to go on a private tour. It was one of the best dives I've ever had. We saw a turtle, lionfish, tons of shrimp, lobsters, stingrays, and octopuses galore. The best part of the dive, though, was when we sank to the bottom and turned our lights inward to see the bioluminescent plankton. It was like Christmas underwater! You can skip the day trips but definitely do the night dive ($45) and ask for Danielo! It's not everyday you get to swim in the stars.

Nice Vibe at Gracie's Cool Spot Next Door to Elsa's

Nice Vibe at Gracie's Cool Spot Next Door to Elsa's

There are a few options after Casa Iguana on the SE or windy side of the island. Just after Elsa's and before Carlito's is Gracie's Cool Spot. Loved the vibe here, plus we got a place for 4 on the beach for only $30. Not bad. The walk from the dock is about 10-15 mins.

Elsas
by Caro about 7 years ago

Elsas is a good budget choice as you can have a hut directly at the beach for 15 dollars. The huts are small but nice and have an own bathroom. Elsas is located at the east side of the island so you will always have a fresh breeze when it is hot. The stuff is nice and will wash your laundry for 10 Cordobas per piece, which is a good price on the island.

Cliffside view and family style dinners at Casa Iguana

Cliffside view and family style dinners at Casa Iguana

Casa Iguana sits on top of a cliff overlooking the Caribbean. It is tucked away on the southeastern corner of the island. Life is pretty good here. The view of Iguana Beach, just below, is stunning from this vantage. The thing I remember most, though, were the 3-course gourmet dinners. They were unbelievable, and the family style set up made it easy to meet other travelers. Try to get a cabana facing the ocean so you can watch the sun set over the water from your hammock. The cabanas are clean, nice, simple--nothing fancy. The cheapest cabanas are $35 and fit 2 people. There is no phone, so you'll have to make your reservation through Casa Iguana's site at http://www.casaiguana.net/ or by email. It can take days for a reply so make your reservations well in advance of your arrival date.

Local Specialties

Rundown

Rundown

This is a specialty mixed seafood stew served throughout the Corn Islands and offered to every tourist. The coconut milk based soup can come with lobster, shrimp, conch, and other local catch with plantain, banana, yucca, and taro. Rundown has to be ordered in advance. Prices range from $10-15 on Little Corn and slightly lower on Big Corn. We paid a premium to have it done right at Twila's Havana Cuban Restaurant near the dock. Incredible meal and she even has a deck for sleeping afterwards!

Restaurants

Rosas
by Caro about 7 years ago

This is a small and neat restaurant with good prices and delicious food. Breakfast is the cheapest, for 3 dollars including a fruit salad and tea or coffee; the pancakes are really worth to try! Lunch and dinner prices vary between 120 and 200 Cordobas for good island-style dishes like lobster or a great curry-coconut dish. You will find the restaurant if you follow the signs for Casa Iguana, its a light blue building besides the way.

Getting Around

Boat

Best Seats are in the Middle or Back of the Boat

Best Seats are in the Middle or Back of the Boat

The boat ride from Big Corn is about 30 minutes. It can feel like hours, though, when your boatman insists on speeding over 5-foot waves and sends you flying off your seat. Arrive at the dock early to grab a seat as far away from the front as possible. Waves can get pretty gnarly so try to sit in the middle of your row and bring a bag for your backpack as an extra precaution. As of 7/6/2013, boat times from Big Corn to Little Corn were 10am & 4:30pm with some flexibility to accommodate late flights. Boats from Little Corn to Big Corn depart 6:30am & 1:30pm.

General Advice

Internet

Internet access
by Caro about 7 years ago

little Corn has some spots to go to the internet, for example the Tranquilos bar and some others as well, you just have to buy a drink, for sure. Some hotels offer internet access but this can get really expensive, in the Casa Iguana for example you pay one dollar for 5 minutes of internet. There is also an internet cafe next to the school inland for 15 Cordobas for half an hour.
