Surf's Point serves the best jam crepes for breakfast.

We arrived at this hostel at 1am and woke up the owner, Yann, who was kind enough to let us sleep on his living room floor, until he could figure out sleeping arrangements in the morning. When we woke up, Yann and his wife prepared the most magnificent jam crepes. At night, they fed us delicious coco con miel and, when they heard we were missing breakfast tacos from Texas, they made us this crazy bean/cheese taco that was even better than what we were craving. Surf's Point is the place to stay if you visit this super-chill beach town on Panama's Pacific Coast.

From David, you have to take several buses to get to Santa Catalina. First, you'll take the double-decker bus from David to Santiago ($9.10, 3 hrs). When you arrive in Santiago, take a taxi to Terminal Transporte de Veraguas ($2 for 4 people, 5 mins). From there, you'll catch the Santiago-Sona bus that leaves every 20-30 minutes ($2.10, 1 hr). Buses from Sona to Santa Catalina ($4.65, 2 hrs) leave at 5:30am, 11:15am, 2:00pm, and 4:40pm. The new schedule was passed in March. It's a full day of travel, so get started early!

Take Cedron Herb to Avoid Mosquitos for Life!

There is an herb that the locals use here called Cedron. They take it to ward off mosquitos and 'no-see-em' bugs. If you take it, you will be immune to bites 'for life'. Ask your local bartender about it and they might be able to get some for you. It tastes awful! Take with sugar and rum!

What To Bring

Bring lots of cash

Bring enough cash to do activities offered in Santa Catalina (i.e., surfing, diving, fishing). There are no ATM machines here, and the closest "big" town is Sona, about 2 hrs and $9.30 (roundtrip) away.
