Machu Picchu on the Cheap!!!
by Shannonkokko about 7 years ago

Screw the Inca Trail (I just met a girl who paid $880 US!!!) We paid $375CN for 2 ppl that included bus, train from Cusco to Aguas Calientes, overnite accom., tickets to MP and Huana Picchu, train & private cab back to Cusco and overnite 1st class bus to Arequipa. Not bad besides what do you get on the Inca Trail that we didnt get? The actual experience of walking the walk of the Inca? Meh I was there on MP!! That's experience enough for us!!! We stayed at Pirwa (San Francisco) in Cusco. The girl at the tour desk spoke decent English and organised the lot for us.

Do Machu Picchu with a Guide

Do Machu Picchu with a Guide

I've been fortunate enough to visit the ruins on 2 separate occasions. The 1st time, I went without a guide. I thought I could just follow around someone else's tour and overhear everything that I needed to know. That was generally not a good strategy. It was still awesome, but I didn't really know what anything was or the significance of various rocks, alters, etc. The 2nd time, I had a guide for about 3 hours. WOW! There is so much to know around every corner. The experience was so much more fulfilling with a guide. While you are waiting in line to enter the ruins, there will be dozens of guides looking for your business. The licensed guides wear vests and carry credentials.

Do Machu Picchu ALL DAY
by Aaronla about 8 years ago

When booking your ticket to Manchu Picchu, make sure you ask for one extra night at your hostel. Especially on the 2 day trips... Otherwise you will have to leave Manchu Picchu by 1:00pm in order to make your transportation back to Cusco. Also, if you can afford it, take the train all the way to Aqua Calientes, it's a MUCH smoother ride than taking a car/bus on the road... The train is very beautiful and peaceful. Please make sure to have a full day at Manchu Picchu, the fist half will be by guide, and the second half you will have on your own to explore... Manchu Picchu is massive, and deserves a full day <3

ISIC student card pays for itself at Machu Picchu

ISIC student card pays for itself at Machu Picchu

The entrance fee for non-Peruvian adults is $40. If you have a student ID, you pay only half or close to half. When we were there in September, we saw MP officials give a discount to someone with a non-ISIC student card. However, the official site, http://www.machupicchu.gob.pe/, says they only take ISIC. Up to you what you decide to bring....
